Margaret Lilardia Tucker MBE (affectionately known as Aunty Marge) was a significant Aboriginal activist and one of the first Aboriginal women to publish for mainstream audiences.
Aunty Marge’s 1977 If Everyone Cared was a landmark publication. In that first edition, her tone and content were edited to make the book more accessible and palatable to non-Indigenous readers.
Drawing on her handwritten manuscript held in the collections of the National Library of Australia, If Everyone Cared Enough reclaims Aunty Marge’s original words, reinstating what was previously omitted and allowing her generous storytelling voice to speak even more clearly.
Her autobiography opens with memories of a joyful childhood—swimming and fishing, listening and learning—which ended abruptly when she was taken from her family and sent to the Cootamundra Domestic Training Home for Aboriginal Girls. This nationally important memoir shares the story of a brave, dedicated woman and her work towards Aboriginal recognition and rights.

Margaret Tucker
Margaret Tucker, known as Aunty Marge, is revered as a trail-blazing Aboriginal activist. Named Lilardia (meaning ‘fower’) when she was born in 1904, she grew up on the Cummeragunja and Moonahcullah missions in New South Wales.
