Wonderment
Belinda Newton
A captivating dual-timeline novel of women’s lives, long-held secrets and mysteries that echo across generations.
On a small island off Sardinia, the ancient art of weaving byssus, a golden sea silk prized since antiquity, has been passed from woman to woman for centuries. But the mussel from which it is harvested is nearing extinction, and Adela Pilloni, the last Mistress of the Sea, has no successor.
When struggling author and academic Alice Bird discovers Adela’s story – and its legendary origins with Berenice, the last Judean Queen – she sees a chance to revive her faltering career. With ancient history professor Isaac Rothwell, she travels to Sardinia to uncover the truth.
But as Alice discovers that the story of Berenice and byssus may not be what it seems, her own life begins to unravel. Weaving together ancient mystery and contemporary lives, this is a story about what remains when our histories, identities and beliefs begin to fall apart.
